8 of the best design hotels in Barcelona

Ever since Gaudi released his first sketches for the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona has had a reputation for its pioneering architecture. This eye for design has filtered down through the generations, and today you don’t even have to look further than the city’s hotels for examples of state-of-the-art construction or inventive interiors.

Casa Fuster Hotel

Rating:

Casa Fuster wasn’t designed by just any old architect. The 1908 modernist building that houses today’s hotel was renovated by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, whose CV features the UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Hospital de Sant Pau and Palau de la Música Catalana – also in Barcelona. The hotel features 105 elegant bedrooms as well as a panoramic terrace from which you can see all the way to the Mediterranean Sea, and a clutch of eateries that includes the photogenic Café Vienes with its vaulted ceilings and marble columns.

Hotel Omm

Rating:

From the outside it looks like sections of Hotel Omm’s façade are peeling back like the pages of a book. What you’re actually seeing is a series of cleverly designed windows designed by architect Juli Capella to give guests a little more privacy in their rooms. Inside, the design details continue all the way down to the mattresses, which were specially engineered to a commission by owner Rosa Maria Esteva. There’s even an element of architecture in the food: the on-site Roca Moo restaurant has a Michelin star and dishes come out looking like mini sculptures.

H10 Art Gallery

Rating:

The walls of H10 Art Gallery, in Eixample, are lined with a collection of artworks and lithographs from international artists. Each artist has been given a dedicated floor, so there’s a floor that celebrates Francis Bacon, one that pays homage to Roy Lichtenstein and one that’s inspired by Joan Miró, for example. The works filter through from the corridors to the sleeping areas and even make it into some of the bathrooms. In addition, there’s the Pop Art Coffee Shop and Art Gallery Restaurant crammed with murals, installation works and wall hangings.

Murmuri Barcelona

Rating:

British designer Kelly Hoppen is the brains behind the interior design at Murmuri Barcelona, near Barcelona Museum. Inside each room you’ll find textiles by high-end Spanish brand Gastón and Daniela, retro-style lamps by London-based Andrew Martin, desks from Italian company Maxalto and black-and-white wall art signed by Venezuelan-born Dutch artist Ron van Dongen. The whole lot combines to create spaces that are modern but cosy at the same time.

Hotel Casa Bonay

Rating:

Nothing has ever been an afterthought as far as design is concerned at Hotel Casa Bonay. Even the soap is designer – rooms feature hand-made rosemary and olive oil soap and oat and bergamot shampoo from local producer Las Lilas. The list of other artists and designers involved in the creation of this hotel, which has been set up in a restored neo-classical building in Eixample, include lighting editors, flower arrangers and a social project fabric and bedding company called Texidors. The food is artisan too. The hotel has its own barista-quality coffee shop as well as a tapas lounge and a Southeast Asian restaurant.

Cotton House Hotel

Rating:

The Cotton House Hotel is the product of painstaking conservation work. Once the headquarters of the cotton textile foundation Fundación Textil Algodonera, the 19th-century building has been sympathetically renovated. Inside you’ll find a striking marble spiral staircase, parquet flooring and frescoed ceilings. But there are modern touches, too, in the form of contemporary leather furniture and statement lighting. In a nod to its past, the hotel also offers its guests an artisan tailoring service – measurements are taken in the room that was once the office of the cotton company’s guild members.

Renaissance Barcelona Fira Hotel

Rating:

Out of the ordinary is the best way to describe Renaissance Barcelona Fira Hotel. The creation of French architect Jean Nouvel, the building is made of two independent columns joined together by a series of bridge-style walkways and vertical gardens. Even the windows are unconventional. Instead of squares, circles or rectangles, they’re shaped like palm leaves and designed so that light is cast through them in different ways at different times of the day.

Sercotel Amister Arts Hotel

Rating:

A different artist was commissioned to decorate each floor of the Sercotel Amister Arts Hotel. Each one had their own specialism, in fields such as concrete techniques, collage, photography, painting, video and engraving. One thing that connected the artists, however, was their brief to convey the concept of travelling through their work. Away from the murals and artworks on the corridors and walls, there are art books for guests to get stuck into in the lounge and a rooftop pool that’s surrounded by a graffiti terrace lined with bright murals.
